We are exposed to an ever-increasing number of environmental toxins on a day-to-day basis.
For example, a high proportion of our food now contains added chemicals, additives and
preservatives.
As a result, there is a growing demand for organic products and more and more people are
regularly seeking to cleanse and detox their bodies.
Individuals that are health conscious or are seeking to improve their general health and well-
being will often turn to health supplements for support. However, there is little point in living
an organic lifestyle, or eating a living and/or raw food diet, only to then take health
supplements that contain unnatural, man-made ingredients themselves!
As such, not only are more and more people choosing organic supplements, but they are also
demanding that those supplements be in “food form” or “food state”, for maximum absorption
and utilisation.
What does it mean?
The terms “food form” or “food state” in relation to health supplements simply mean that
the relevant products have been specially designed to be as similar to real food as possible.
Why is it important?
The significance of a health supplement product being in food form is that it is thought to mean
that the body can absorb the nutrients more easily. A good example of the potential benefits of
food form supplements versus synthetic supplements is ascorbic acid used in Vitamin C tablets.
A lot of Vitamin C sold is ascorbic acid, which is a man-made chemical manufactured in
chemical plants - this fact is largely unknown and, contrary to popular belief, ascorbic acid and
Vitamin C are not structurally identical.
The acid is an artificial, reduced form of the natural vitamin. Being a chemical and an acid,
ascorbic acid is not absorbed or used by the body in the same way as food and can actually upset
the gut and irritate the digestive tract.
Food form supplements
Our bodies are designed to absorb and utilise natural, unadulterated foods. We cannot properly
or fully utilise chemically polluted foods or synthetic vitamins.
A large proportion of a synthetic supplement will simply pass by urination, with little (or no)
benefit to the body.
Food form supplements are thought to be more easily absorbed, which in turn logically means
that they would be more effective. Another advantage is that they are slow release.
