Living foods
As their name suggests, “living foods” still have their life-force intact. During sprouting, seeds
release stored nutrients in a burst of vitality as they attempt to grow into full-sized plants. It is
these nutrients that those on living food diets are trying to tap into. These foods are thought by
many to be at the peak of their nutritional value and therefore able to supply optimum nutrients
to the body.
Arguably, the best living foods are those that are organically grown, because the full spectrum
of nutrients in the soil are preserved and there are no toxic chemicals to negate their benefits.
It is claimed by living food protocol supporters, particularly those with medical conditions, that
two major reasons for choosing this lifestyle are:
•
the fact that living foods are high in nutrients and replete with living enzymes and amino
acids, which cannot be achieved with cooked foods;
•
the fact that living foods place a lesser burden on the digestive system than other food
types, without continually depleting our own bodily stores of digestive enzymes.
Raw foods
As with the living food diet, the focus of a raw food eating regime is on eating uncooked, highly
nutritious foods. As these foods are fruit and vegetables, they tend to be low in calories and high
in nutrients, which would otherwise be lost if cooked.
The raw food diet consists of food that is uncooked and unprocessed. A food is essentially ‘raw' if
it is kept below 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degree Celsius); the temperature above which
enzymes are destroyed. It still contains important enzymes, which act as digestive aids.
Enzymes are particularly important because they are known to be the "life-force" or "energy" of
food. Eating enzyme-depleted foods will mean that your body is unable to fully utilise foods,
which will in turn cause toxicity in the body.
Unprocessed, preferably organic, whole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds,
beans, sprouts, grains, legumes, dried fruit, seaweed, freshly juiced fruit and vegetables are all
examples of highly nutritious raw foods, which lead to higher intake of vitamins and
antioxidants.
It is widely believed that some of the benefits of a raw food diets include:
•
weight loss (raw foods contain fewer trans fats and less saturated fat)
•
improved digestive function (through increased levels of fibre)
•
higher energy levels
•
improved resistance to illness
•
healthier-looking hair and skin.
Raw foods also tend to be low in sodium and high in potassium, magnesium, folate and health-
promoting plant chemicals called phytochemicals.
The time factor
In an ideal world, everyone would be able to get all of the nutrients they need on a daily basis
from living foods grown themselves under organic conditions, eaten in either a raw or juiced
form.
However, for most people, this is simply not feasible in this modern age. Time, growing space,
work and family commitments are just a few reasons why living and raw food protocols are not
necessarily accessible on a wide-scale basis.
The answer
Notwithstanding the time factor and other reasons why a raw or living food regime may not be a
feasible option for you and your family, you may still want to enjoy the associated nutritional
benefits on a regular basis.
